"The first church congregation was Mesopotamia, it was organized in 1881. Services
were held in homes. --------- On the 27th of May, 1900, some of the church members
met and decided to build a church at the Mesopotamia Cemetery located three miles
west, and one-half mile south of Alvarado. They never did get the church built.
---- The congregation was dissolved in 1906." Information about the cemetery is
on page 600 in the 1976 Marshall County History Book. It is part of the Adolf
and Kristine Tinglum Elden history. There is no sign on the site but it is mowed.
Family names of those buried there are: Walberg, Klegstad, Anderson, Hoff, Christian,

Newspaper article about Greenwood Cemetery found in the cemetery book compiled
by James Johnson: "The first Warren Cemetery was called Rose Hill and was located
north of Snake River on the extreme northwest corner of section 31 in the township
of McCrea...........This plot (Greenwood Cemetery) was surveyed into lots, fenced
and the first interment made in February 1880 when bodies began to be transferred
from Rose Hill to Greenwood Cemetery. No records were found as to when this transfer
was completed but it is believed that there are no bodies remaining in the old
cemetery at the present time." Rose Hill Cemetery is mentioned as abandoned in
the list of private burials compiled by Mrs. Gladys Nichools of Warren and her
father, S. D. Lincoln in the 1930' s. |

Napoleon and Ida Beaudry family died of black Diphtheria. In their isolation Napoleon
Beaudry dug the graves and buried his small sons and daughters. Napoleon and Ida
Beaudry are buried in this cemetery." Napoleon and Ida Beaudry donated the land
where the St. Joseph Mission Church was built in Section 9 and the cemetery site
in section 8 was donated by Dennis and Phylomene Carpenter. The cemetery is fenced
and mowed. The site is marked by a large steel cross. The area is prone to flooding
from the Red River and many of the stones are embedded in concrete so they are
not washed away. |

Works Progress Administration Report: "Soon after the building of the St. Paul,
Minneapolis and Manitoba railroad (Great Northern), the level, fertile prairie
land in the vicinity of Stephen was rapidly taken up by immigrants who proceeded
to build homes and establish schools and churches. In the absence of cemeteries,
interments were sometimes made on farms. A number of such burials were made on
the farm of Solomon Lundin. No records were kept prior 1908. Earliest monument
is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bendix Isaacson, 1890. The cemetery is located in
the NE corner of Section 12. It became the property of the congregation in 1898,
though the plot had been used for burials for some years previously. There were
never any burials in the churchyard." History of the St. Petri Lutheran Church
and Cemetery is on page 162 of the Stephen, MN history book "Our Town" written
in 1978. There is no church. The cemetery is mowed and there is a sign. Maps and
list of burials is kept at First Lutheran Church in Stephen, MN. |

Works Progress Administration Report: "On the north bank of the Tamarack River.
William Wright, 1881. He came to Marshall County about the year 1879 and built
a small cabin. His only companion was a large dog which shared the cabin with
him. He constructed a crude cot of poles, and to this he kept his dog tied at
night. Some time in March 1881, Mr. Wright died. The dog, impelled by hunger or
possibly because he realized something was wrong, gnawed the pole to which his
leash was fastened, then gnawed his way outside the door and went to the home
of a neighbor some distance away. The neighbor realized that something was wrong,
and set out at once for the cabin where he discovered the lifeless body of Mr.
Wright. Others in the locality were notified, lumber was brought in from Argyle,
a coffin was made and the body was buried in the cabin." Information from Stephen
history book, Our Town: "William Wright was buried in the dirt floor of his homestead
cabin in 1881". Also in the list of private burials compiled in the 1930's by
Mrs. Gladys Nichools of Warren and her father, S.D. Lincoln: "William Wright". |
