Notes
History of the Old Assumption Catholic Church and Cemetery is on page 296
of the of 1976 Marshall Co. History Book. The original church and cemetery was
in Section 35 Augsburg Township. In 1894 the church was moved to Section 5 Wright
Township and the New Assumption Catholic Cemetery was started. Additional information
on the cemetery and a list of possible burials is available at the following web
site: http://www.geocities.com/hvidsten_m/floriancemeteries.html
- A large concrete cross marks the site. The only grave with a name is that of
Pauline (Kitowski) Kurowski, wife of Frank Kurowski, Sr., who passed away in 1886.
Her grave is outlined with concrete and has a concrete tombstone (cross) which
was erected by her husband (in the center of the cemetery). There is a child's
grave outlined in concrete and with a small concrete cross but it has no name.
There is also a medium concrete cross marking a site but it is broken. The cemetery
is located on a high spot on a sand ridge and it is fenced and mowed. USGS has
listed as Florian Cemetery. |

Works Progress Administration Report: "On Mike McCollough land. Originally the
site was fenced, but at present there is nothing to indicate the exact location
of the graves. Mike McCollough, afterwards known as "Tamarack Mack", was the first
white man to establish a permanent residence within the confines of what is now
Marshall County, MN. In 1871 he came from Dakota Territory, where he had lived
for six years, and built a cabin near the Tamarack River. The County of Marshall
was organized in 1879 and soon afterwards the town of Tamarack. An effort was
made at that time to have the town named McCollough in honor of the first settler
but in deference to Nr. McCollough's wishes, the name Tamarack was selected instead.
Edward McCollough, son of Mike McCollough, died 1877; Hugh Diamond, died 1880;
Two children of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Parent, neighbors of the McCollough's, died 1881;
Alfred Diamond, died 27 Bef 1882; Mike McCollough, died 1883; Mrs. Thos. McCollough,

Thos. McCollough, a cousin of Mike McCollough, died Dec 1899." Also in the list
