Notes
Cemetery named for John Atkinson (1805-1892) who acquired land in the 1840's and built a home by Old Territorial Road between Pt Douglas and St Paul. Cemetery started in 1860's as a family graveyard and gradually became a community burial ground for families in the area. An association was charted in 1874 but was non existent in the early 1900's. The last burial was in 1907. The cemetery was regraded by the Lion's Club and the city took over ownership in 1980. Broken tombstones were set in concrete horizontally in the shade of a maple tree in the center of the cemetery. There are approximately 50 burials with 26 tombstones. The cemetery is in an unique setting, between McDonald's and Tires Plus. A bronze marker with the cemetery name was installed in 1982 by the Washington County Historical Society.

Established on four acres in 1856, now 32 acres. Original land purchased from Ashel Stevens. Unique to this cemetery is a cluster of small white frame buildings in the center of the cemetery grounds. These are believed to represent the remains of the Cottage Grove Lyceum Hall, constructed in 1855 as a community center. They were moved to the cemetery sometime after the Civil War. A bronze marker with the cemetery name was installed in 1991 by the WA County Historical Society.

At Memorial Lutheran Church on right, first is Evergreen Cemetery, then Memorial Lutheran Cemetery; turn right at church driveway. They are divided by driveway.
Notes
When platting Afton, 20 acres were donated for a cemetery in 1855 but not deeded to Evergreen until 1873. Old records of the association date back to 1873. Afton Historical Society has updated and converted records to a new system by using maps and the old records. There are many unmarked gravesites. Grave care is overseen by an 11 member citizen board. From St. Paul take Hwy 94 east to Manning Ave (Hwy 95); exit right onto Manning, then left onto frontage (Old Hudson Road). Travel east to Indian Trail and to cemetery. Cemetery is located at Fahlstrom Preserve.
Notes
Cemetery named for Jacob Fahlstrom who converted to Methodism in 1837 and for his work as a missionary to Indians and as a lay preacher to white settlers. There are about a dozen graves. The location of the graves is undisclosed but there are several markers made in granite, metal, and concrete. A memorial marker on the graves of Jacob and Margaret Fahlstrom was dedicated by the Historical Society of the MN Conference of Methodist Church in 1964. In 1997 the Fahlstrom land was sold for the development of homes. The developer cleared underbrush and improved the cemetery by installing crushed rock paths and a wrought iron fence surrounding the markers. There was a tombstone with two names located in a grove of box elders. More recently the tombstone was found along side of the road and was brought to the museum of the Afton Historical Society. A descendent of the Leith family was contacted but they were never able to locate the original gravesite. It was their intention to take the stone to the Leith cemetery plot at Lakeview Cemetery in Lakeland, MN.

Notes
Mount Hope is the oldest cemetery in Afton. It was dedicated the same year the village was platted, 1855. It was officially assigned five acres; land donated by the Haskell and Getchell families but the cemetery never grew beyond one half acre. The first burial was in 1854, the last in 1892. Poor access probably accounts for its discontinued use. Many graves are scattered in a wooded area. Some have large monuments and fences. Until recently, the cemetery could only be reached via a steep winding former wagon trail. The City of Afton who now maintains the cemetery has completed a new driveway and two car parking area and have graveled the trail. Borings done in 2000 by archeology people revealed as many as 60 burials with no markers. There are four Civil War veterans buried in this cemetery. Several community groups have occasionally tried to rescue the cemetery from vandalism and lack of care. See: "Afton Remembered" published 1996, pp 53-54, by Edwin G. Robb at the MN Historical Society, Call No F612.W49 A376.

The cemetery was located on North Shore Road, two miles north of village of Forest Lake. Land for cemetery was given some time after 1856. Jeremiah Poston was given quit claim deed by Thomas Connally at Stillwater, acting land agent for President Buchanan. For $200.00 Poston bought a quarter section of land. He set aside one acre for a burial plot. At one time the names of those buried there were on old white markers. It included the families of Shiels, Stipes, Simmons, Veith, Poston, Peoples, and Marshes. The cemetery no long exists. See: "Forest Lake Times" dated September 15, 1949.

Exact location differs. John and Elizabeth Erickson, in 1990, stated "Nancy Oldham and her parents were said by Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Paulson to be buried in unmarked graves on the west side of Trading Post Road, one mile south of its junction with Co Rd 18 southwest of Afton". An Afton old timer who has died, remembered the burial plot being on the northwest corner of Trading Post Trail and 50th Street in Afton and that the landowner plowed around it in the middle of the field and trees had grown around the plot.

Notes
At the turn of the century this was the location of a rest home affiliated with Church of God. Cemetery was for its inmates; many were indigent. Cemetery records lost in 1945. By 1982 all above ground evidence of cemetery had disappeared and most of the ground covered by row crops. Site marked with one large carved granite monument; individual markers have disappeared. During highway construction in 1982, cemetery was resurveyed and fenced. Shallow depressions are only evidence of burials. Cemetery owned by city. Listed in City Register of Historic Sites and Landmarks. Access by means of pedestrian trail; no off- street parking. Bronze marker installed in 1990 by Washington County Historical Society. This cemetery was the focus, as well as several others, of the Heritage Education Project of Cottage Grove and Newport.

Farm was residence for indigent people of Washington County. North and east of the main building was a boggy area surrounding a wooded knoll. There was a stone for Pernilla M. Spence (or Spengs) who died in 1893. George Jarchow, former superintendent of the home, compiled a list of residents who died between 1895 and 1914. Most, maybe all, were exhumed and reburied at Fairview. Jarchow's register now at MHS.

Its work was taken over by the Swedish Methodist Episcopal Church in Afton. The register of burials was kept in the record book of the Mound Prairie Church Association formed in 1896 and an old plat map shows a church in one corner. Notes
The cemetery carries the name given the original Newport settlement in 1843 by John A. Ford. In 1848 John Holton, a Newport pioneer made this land available for the private burials of the families of the area's oldest settlers. Some people associated with the Red Rock Methodist Camp meetings during the 1868 to 1937 period are also buried here. It is less than an acre and has about 33 burials; about 24 are marked with headstones, obelisks, and tablets. Cemetery is situated on steep rising land, making maintenance difficult. The Association dates from 1921 but the burial ground is much older, going back to the 1860's. Early records were destroyed in a house fire in 1921; later records are incomplete. The last interment was in 1982. A brass marker with the cemetery name was installed in 1989 by the Washington County Historical Society. See: "The Unique Legacy of Red Rock and Newport Minnesota, 1837-1989" by M. From St Paul, Hwy 36 east to Manning Ave (Co Rd 15), left on Manning. After crossing 75th St (Co Rd 12), the cemetery is on the right.
Notes
The land was originally the site of William Rutherford's home but when he went to Michigan in 1849 to get his bride, the house burned down. He chose a site down the road not far from the cemetery to rebuild his house and donated the land for the cemetery. The first recorded burial and stone is that of Charity Ramsden, born 1823, died 1851. See: Stillwater Gazette dated May 7, 1959, article "Data on Pioneer Cemeteries".

The cemetery was at the northern junction of Co Rd 21 and State Hwy 95 (now Hwy 18) in Afton Twp.
Notes
Congregation disbanded in 1941 and the church was moved. The cemetery was without care for many years. In 1989 a Boy Scout troop raised and straightened some markers, cut grass, planted flowers, and constructed a new St. Paulus Cemetery sign. Many of the markers have German names. The cemetery, about 40 by 44 yards, is close to the former parsonage now being used as private home. No records known to exist. Cemetery is now being maintained by City of Afton. Most bodies were moved to Fairview Cemetery in Stillwater. See: Stillwater Gazette, May 7, 1959, "Data on Pioneer Cemeteries". The only remaining stone is that of Sally Huntley who died April 3, 1868. She is now buried with the other Huntleys at Fairview. This burying ground is undoubtedly the cemetery John and Elizabeth Erickson told about, stating it was in the woods west of Arcola and had 14 graves including a Huntley. Within memory of people still living there in 1978, there was a cemetery with grave markers on the south side of Co Rd 22 in Cottage Grove Twp, 1/2 mile west of junction with township road and east of where Co Rd 22 begins descent to Mississippi valley. No sign of cemetery or markers in 1978. Was possibly a former church site and possibly the same cemetery reported by Harry Palm.
