Sometime between Sept. 22-24, unknown suspect(s) removed a heart-shaped stepping stone from a grave site at the Bailey Station Cemetery located on the 189th block of County Road 14 in Big Lake Township. The stone is tan in color, about six inches in diameter, with red glass in the middle. The name Gloria Wold is engraved in the glass. ".... Becker Cemetery started out as a family burial ground. Although the first recorded death in the area was a Mrs. Stiles in 1857, the first burial in this cemetery was 25 year-old Robert Sadley in 1867, probably another relative of John A. Wagner. Land records show that the Sadley farm was next to the cemetery, which was known early on as the 'Crawford burying ground' because Noble and Lucinda Crawford owned it and lived in a house a few hundred feet to the northeast.......The community discussed organizing a cemetery association as provided for in Minnesota statues and on June 24, 1881, a large group of people met and formed the Becker Cemetery Association. On July 9, 1881, they held another meeting at the schoolhouse and chose officers ..... shares were sold for $1 each, and an 8-grave lot sold for $1...." She is a member of the Bellwood Cemetery board. She told me that her father, Henry Howe moved his family up to the area in 1937 and had been on the board since the late 1930s, along with Bill Wilson and Harry Swanson. There is a large open lot on the north side of the cemetery which Millie says is used for the Memorial Day ceremony presented by the Legion and Boy Scouts. The lot was added to the cemetery about 30 years ago. The cemetery is not affiliated with a church.

26 August 2003. Crissie Magney, born 1911, told me (Jodi Magnuson) about a cemetery she remembers from her youth which was located south of Big Lake (on what is now called 68). The cemetery was overgrown then and was between or near the properties of Charlie Gibbs and the place the Jones family lived on (the Almon Hanson property). She says as kids they never went into the cemetery, they believed it was haunted. She recalls Pearl Johnson (Buster Swanson's wife)'s mother would tell stories about the cemetery, they lived within sight of it. One story was of the mother seeing a fire ball come rolling across the field. (From various old plat maps, it looks as if the property might be at the junction of County Road 68 and County Road 14 (old 11)

There is a small section on the north side of the cemetery with three or four graves for high school aged kids who have died in 2000/2001. These graves are very actively visited. They have many mementos with a plastic shoe box that contains a diary for people to leave messages and letters written to the deceased. Very touching. e-mail message from Pat Adair, Warden of MN Correctional Facility: April 12, 2005 1:54:52 PM CDT
Hello, Yes, there is a cemetery on state property adjacent to the Correctional facility. To my knowledge, it has no real name. It used to be referred to as the Reformatory cemetery. It is located on the south side of Hwy 301, across from the Correctional Facility.
I came across a plat number which is: 99807
There are 35 graves. 33 of them were inmates at this facility. One of them is a transient that was found dead by the nearby railroad tracks. The other is a baby girl, the one day old daughter of a female inmate who was housed here in 1932. The first inmate was buried here in 1895. The last was in 1955. Each grave bears a polished granite marker. In the summer months a group of our staff maintains the cemetery.
I do have a map of the cemetery listing who is buried in which grave. I could certainly mail or fax it to you. Warden Pat Adair. -------- 21 August 2005 - Jodi's visit to the cemetery: "I would suggest letting the prison know that you are looking for the cemetery before you go tramping around on their property. There are 35 stones. The one for the baby "Joan" is a little larger than the rest, as are two that list full names and the phrase "Died on Duty" - William Burroughs and Fred Almandinger."

Jodi Magnuson's notes: I visited this cemetery on 27 August 2003. The cemetery is on the dirt road of 175th Ave SE at about 43rd Street. It sits on the east side of the road on the edge of the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. It is a small cemetery with only about 50 stones. The day I visited, it had been mowed but not very well taken care of otherwise. The front gate had fallen off the hinges and was sitting on the ground. *

HISTORY OF ST. PIUS X CATHOLIC CHURCH
Fifty people met on October 4, 1957, and started to plan to build a church in Zimmerman. The parish name "St. Pious X" was decided upon at that time. There were about thirty families.
The first Mass was celebrated on October 27, 1957, in the basement of the American Legion Hall which later burned down.
The first trustees were Roger MARTURANO and Maurice LUBY, and the building committee included Joe SCHARF, Isidore LIEB and Reuben MATHISON.
On May 4, 1958, ground was broken for the new church. Father Joseph A. LINN was made pastor of Our Lady of the Lake, Big Lake, of St. Pius X Mission Church in Zimmerman on June 20, 1958. He was followed by Father Nicholas ZIMMER in 1972 when Father Joseph LINN became seriously ill and died July 20, 1973, at the age of 47.
With the growth of the Parish came the realization that the church would have to be expanded to provide both church and religious education space. An addition was made to the church in 1980 and included the frescoes of the four evangelists - St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke and St. John. The frescoes were done by Charles KASPNER of St. Cloud and quite possibly are the only two true frescoes in the State of Minnesota. Stained glass windows were put into the entire church at this time also.
Father Nicholas ZIMMER left in 1984 and Father Bernard MISCHKE was installed, then in 1985 Father Paul FOLSOM became pastor. At the present there are about 400 families.
