Notes St
Paul Div of Parks & Recreation (1949, quoted by Pope, p 82): Owned by three
churches. The north section was owned by the First Swedish Evangelical Lutheran
Church, later by the Memorial English Evangelical Lutheran Church. The south section
was owned by the German Evangelical Lutheran trinity Church. Since the requirements
for tax-exempt status were not met, taxes were levied against the property, until
it was tax-forfeited. The cemeteries had been inactive since about 1890 (when
records were destroyed by fire). Bodies from the north section were moved to union
Cemetery. Bodies from the south section were moved to Elmhurst Cemetery. After
much discussion and several legal proceedings, the city made the area into a playground.
Bodies discovered during playground construction were reburied in Elmhurst Cemetery. |
