Griffith's Valuation of Ireland (1848 - 1864) (FTM CD # 188)
This CD is an index to the greatest of all Irish genealogical resources, Griffith's Valuation, or the Primary Valuation of Ireland. Carried out between 1848 and 1864 under the direction of Sir Richard Griffith, this survey of Ireland was intended to determine the amount of tax each person should pay towards the support of the poor within their poor law union. The Valuation is arranged by county, barony, poor law union, civil parish , and townland, and lists every landholder and every householder in Ireland--at that time about 1.25 million people.

Irish Source Records (1500's - 1800's) (FTM CD # 275)
Reconstructing the lost records has been a passion of historians and genealogists alike, who have succeeded in patching together substitute records and bringing to light the various indexes, abstracts, and transcriptions of records that had been made before the fire. Many such records have been published by the Genealogical Publishing Company, and they are included on this Family Archive CD (along with some additional records) and linked by a single electronic name index.
Along with such celebrated source records as Griffith's Valuation of Ireland, 1848-1864 and the Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-1838, this is one of the most important collections of Irish records available.
The Following books are contained on this CD:
  • A Guide to Copies and Abstracts of Irish Wills
  • Indexes to Irish Wills, 1536-1857
  • Index to the Prerogative Wills of Ireland, 1536-1810
  • Quaker Records, Dublin, Abstracts of Wills
  • Return of Owners of Land in Ireland 1876
  • Irish Marriages [from Walker's Hibernian Magazine, 1771-1812]

Tithe Applotment Books of Ireland 1823-38 (FTM CD # 262)
Along with Griffith's Primary Valuation of Ireland, compiled between 1848 and 1864, the most important body of Irish land records are the Tithe Applotment Books of 1823-1838, preceding Griffith's Valuation by a full generation and naming hundreds of thousands of Irish landholders--owners and tenants alike. Both surveys pre-date the official registration of births, marriages, and deaths, which didn't commence until 1864, and therefore are immensely important in terms of constructing not just an image of a particular family line but of wider social conditions in Ireland. Together they are the greatest of all Irish genealogical resources.

1847 Town Plans of Dublin City
These maps, made available by the Planning Department of Dublin Corporation, are the first detailed town plans of Dublin City to be produced by the Ordnance Survey. They are still used today, particularly by cartographers and city planners and developers.
The 5-foot (60 inches to the mile) maps of Dublin City published in 1847 by the Ordnance Survey of Ireland represent the epitome of Irish cartography when the Survey was experiencing its most ambitious and creative phase under the leadership of Thomas A. Larcom (1801-79).

    1851 Dublin City Census
The destruction of the 19th century Irish Census returns is probably the greatest loss that genealogy in Ireland has suffered. Prior to the destruction of the 1851 census, Dr. D.A. Chart of the Public Record Office compiled a comprehensive list of the names and addresses of heads of households for Dublin City.
This unique genealogical source has now been edited and converted to database format by Seán Magee making it available to all researchers worldwide. It contains over 60,000 names and addresses (and some occupations) in the city of Dublin.
This CD-ROM also contains scanned images of the original 1847 Ordnance Survey Town Plans of Dublin City, courtesy of Dublin Corporation. These 33 maps contain remarkable detail of all the streets and houses within the city at this time, to help users identify specific addresses.
        This publication contains:
    • Over 60,000 names and addresses
    • All 33 Ordnance Survey Town Plans of Dublin City from 1847, courtesy of Dublin Corporation

    Fitzwilliam Tenants (1847-1856)
In reaction to the Potato Famine many landlords in Ireland evicted impoverished tenants, enabling them to be rid of the encumbrance these people could become on their already struggling estates. Some landlords, hoping for a more humane way to ease the burden looked to assisted emigration, sending surplus tenants overseas with incentives.
In the years between 1847 and 1856 nearly 6000 “surplus” or unviable tenants from the Fitzwilliam Estate, County Wicklow, Ireland were sent across the Atlantic to Canada. The estate was over 85,000 acres, covering one-fifth of the entire county of Wicklow and had more than 20,000 tenants. 383 of these tenants were sent to St. Andrews, New Brunswick on the Star, their voyage funded by their landlord. They had been promised three months’ work on railroad construction in New Brunswick, after which they might be kept on. In comparison to the vast majority of famine emigrants, they appear to have been in an enviable position. However, they were received by an ill equipped emigrant welfare system and a railway company unprepared for their numbers. The experience of these emigrants highlights the inadequacies and conditions they met with upon starting a new life in New Brunswick, including periods of continued destitution and reliance on the province for support. Yet, despite these issues a large number of Star immigrants remained in and contributed to St. Andrews and the surrounding area with lasting results. This database contains the records of those families who left the Fitzwilliam Estate on the Star during these clearances.

The 1798 Rebellion Claimants & Surrenders
The 1798 Rebellion was one of the most traumatic periods in recent Irish history. While documentary evidence for the majority of participants and victims is patchy there are three lists of c. 8,300 people from this period, which were published between 1798-1800. These have been republished for the first time on CD (Eneclann, 2005) and are:
    • Over 6,100 people who made compensation claims for property destroyed all over Ireland during the Rebellion
    • Over 1,000 people who surrendered arms in Dublin City and County in 1798
    • Over 1,000 people who surrendered arms in Coolock Barony, Co. Dublin, in 1798

    The 1831 Tithe Defaulters
The records compiled in this dataset are the most important evidence we have of the people involved in the infamous Tithe War 1831-38. All occupants of land were required to pay an annual tithe (or religious tax) of 10% of the agricultural produce generated by that holding. This money was demanded by landholders, irrespective of their religion, and was paid directly to the official state church, the Anglican (Episcopalian) Church of Ireland.
However in 1830 and 1831, when increasing numbers refused to pay tithes, the Government set up the Clergy Relief Fund 1831 where Church of Ireland clergymen could claim for the arrears of 1831 tithes.
The names in these records are those recorded by the Church of Ireland clergy who refused to pay their tithe. The people most affected by the Tithe War are precisely those most affected by emigration and the famine in the next generation.

Lewis's Gazetteers of England, Ireland, and Scotland (FTM CD # 270)
This CD comprises the three great gazetteers published by Samuel Lewis in the early to mid-1800s:
    • A Topographical Dictionary of England (4 vols.)
    • A Topographical Dictionary of Ireland (2 vols.)
    • A Topographical Dictionary of Scotland (2 vols.)
(A topographical dictionary, or gazetteer, describes the political, social, cultural, and physical features of a particular locale.)
Of critical importance to the genealogist is the fact that even the most obscure places in England, Ireland, and Scotland are identified in relation to a parish and in most cases to a specific church, leading in turn to the identification of parish records. Thus, if you know the place of origin of your ancestor--the village or town--these gazetteers will show you, in effect, which parish records to search for births, marriages, and deaths. Modern gazetteers are useless for this purpose. But over and above their obvious genealogical value, these gazetteers are fascinating and illuminating in themselves, bringing to life the ancestral homes and villages which until now have existed in name only, or as part of family lore and tradition. Information that was once obscure and mysterious is now at your fingertips, and while helpful in compiling a family history, this type of information is indispensable in understanding the culture and environment in which your ancestors lived.

    AniMap Plus 2.6
Just about every researcher deals with the problem of finding an old town that has long-since disappeared from the map. Or, you have a known location that is not now in the same county that it was 100 or 200 years ago. AniMap has solutions to these problems. This program will display over 2,300 maps to show the changing county boundaries for each of the 48 adjacent United States for every year since colonial times. The earliest map shows Virginia boundaries in 1617. Other states and territories begin with the earliest boundaries established. AniMap includes all years in which there were boundary changes, not just the census years. Maps may be viewed individually, or the program can set them in motion so you can view the boundary changes in a movie like mode. Maps showing the full U.S. are also included showing all the changes in state and territorial boundaries from 1776 to the present.
Each map includes a listing of the changes from the previous map making it simple to keep track of parent counties. There are four speed adjustments in the "run" mode as well as being able to advance by single frames or select a year and skip directly to it.

A part of the 1890 US census was a Special Schedule of Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines and Windows. The schedule was designed to list persons who served in the Army, Navy and Marine Corps of the United States during the war of the rebellion (who were survivors), and their widows. This database is available on microfilm M123 (118 rolls) from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Information listed in this index includes the veteran's name or widow's name, rank, year of enlistment, and year of discharge Although the schedules were designed to list only those who served in military units of the Union and their surviving spouses, a few persons who served in the military units of the Confederate States of America were mistakenly listed.
